About Zoe

Zoe Cohen
Zoe Cohen is a licensed California acupuncturist* who has been in private practice in Oakland since 2000. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at San Diego, Zoe received a Master of Science degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Meiji College of Oriental Medicine in Berkeley. She also underwent specialized training in a Japanese needling technique known for being virtually painless.
Zoe's interest in Chinese Medicine began when she experienced a persistent gynecological problem in her 20's. Feeling dissatisfied with the limitations of the traditional Western medical approach, she began undergoing acupuncture at a local school's public clinic. Within a few months, not only did her condition resolve, but she also enjoyed profound improvements in her overall health and well-being. This experience, coupled with her longstanding interest in holistic healing and helping others, led her to study Chinese Medicine.
In addition, Zoe taught yoga for 8 years, and she incorporates stretching and movement techniques into her treatment regimens when appropriate. The yoga classes, which were given at a local YMCA, included students from their early teens to their late 80's; many had physical limitations or even disabilities that drew them to yoga as therapy. Working with this diverse population, especially those with physical limitations, deepened Zoe's empathy and ability to tailor therapies to individuals based on their unique needs.
* Licensed California acupuncturists have been extensively trained and tested in Chinese and Western medicine during a four-year program in a state-accredited school. They are considered primary health care providers and are tested, licensed and regulated by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance, the same board that regulates doctors and nurses.
